Cocurricular Music

Music Enrolment

All new students wishing to enrol in the Music program at St Rita's College are to complete an online Cocurricular Music Enrolment Form.

Enrolment in the program includes student participation in performance ensembles, instrumental tuition, and music theory classes. To be eligible for an instrumental ensemble, students must be actively learning their instrument either through the College or with an external teacher.

To assist with preparation for next year, it is preferable that enrolments are received before the end of Term 4. The final closing date for Music enrolments is the Friday of Week 1, Term 1.

  • A separate application should be completed for each instrument to be studied.
  • An enrolment form is required for a student who will be participating in choir.
  • Enrolment for continuing students, current Year 6 students, carries over and does not require a form to be completed, unless there is a change to the lesson type of their current enrolment.

See The Family Handbook for a comprehensive overview of our Music program, information on music tuition, ensembles and progression and development opportunities.

Incoming Year 7 students enrolling in the program, depending on their instrument, will automatically be placed into one of the ensembles listed below. Towards the end of Term 1, instrumental students (band and strings) who have shown necessary commitment and appropriate ability as identified by ensemble directors, may be invited to move to an intermediate ensemble. Adjustment to ensembles during Term 1 will only occur at the discretion of ensemble directors with all other ensemble placements occurring at the end of Term 3.

Students wishing to join a choir are not required to have voice lessons but are encouraged to consider lessons. An enrolment form is also required for a student who will be participating in choir.

Students who receive instrumental tuition through the College are required to participate in at least one Cocurricular Music ensemble, except for piano students. Music Ensembles

Cocurricular Music is an ensemble-based program, which has development pathways for students from their early years of learning through to advanced ensembles across the three streams of Band, Strings and Choirs. For those students who like to challenge themselves there are also specialist extension ensembles. We set high expectations and provide the support necessary for students to achieve performance excellence in solo, ensemble, and broader musical contexts.

Once proficiency on an instrument has been achieved, students enrolled in the Cocurricular Music Program are required to become a member of at least one ensemble. The program is divided into three performance streams: Band, Strings and Choir. Within each stream exists a core ensemble along with extension and chamber ensembles.

Cocurricular Debating

Debating at St Rita’s College follows a proud tradition spanning more than 40 years and is offered across Years 5-12. For the past eight years, St Rita’s has been a member of the Senior A competition run by Queensland Debating Union [QDU]. This is an elite competition between selected schools across Brisbane. Each year, debaters participate in the QDU trials for the state team. This is open to debaters in Years 9, 10, and 11. Many St Rita’s College debaters have reached the top 16 debaters during the trials.

Years 7-12

An invitation to join a BGDA or QDU debating team is advertised through the College Newsletter, Verbis, and morning notices on MySRC. For students in Years 7 to 12, teams are formed during the first two weeks of Term 1 with coaching beginning in week three. Students can choose to debate in both or one competition. For Primary students, the invitation and formation of teams begins late term1.

The Brisbane Girls Debating Association [BGDA] competition begins in February and finishes at the end of May. This competition, over five rounds, is held at Brisbane Girls Grammar on Monday evenings.

BGDA provides a skill coaching session before the topic release for one hour to prepare the case followed by the competition. Each year level has a different starting and finishing time. Please refer to the BDGA website for these details.

Staff from St Rita’s College manage the teams. Each round, BGDA releases an article in the week prior to competition to stimulate conversation on the theme for the upcoming debate. A coaching session by the staff team manager is held after school for two hours. This coaching day is negotiated between the coach and team.

Teams consist of four members. Junior year levels rotate through each speaking position to develop debating skills while the senior debaters can specialise and compete in one of two positions.

More information about this competition can be found at https://www.bgda.org.au/

The Queensland Debating Union [QDU] competition begins in February and finishes with finals at the end of August. There are four preliminary rounds which inform the selection of teams for the knockout finals. For students in Years 7 and 8, competition is held on Thursday. For students in Years 9 to 12, competition is held on Wednesdays. Each year level has increasing lengths of time for speeches with Years 10, 11 and 12 including Point of Information rebuttals.

The QDU competition has two formats: short prep and long prep topics. Junior and Middle Years have two long prep and two short prep whereas Senior Years have Round 1 as long prep and then all other rounds as short prep. Evenings with short prep debates require the team to arrive 1 hour 30 minutes prior to the schedule debate. The topic is released, and teams have one hour to form their case. Such evening could begin as early as 4:30pm.

QDU draw is released one week prior to the scheduled debate. While the venue will continue for all four rounds, each round could have a different start time depending on the outcome of the prior round’s win/loss. St Rita’s College is in the Brisbane North region and past venues have included: St Joseph’s College, Nudgee; St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace; Mount Saint Michael’s, Bardon to name a few.

QDU provides online academy training on each debate topic. This is a free opportunity for debaters. Coaching at St Rita’s College is by staff which can include Alumnae, teachers or school officers. A commitment to weekly, 2 hour coaching, sessions is expected. These sessions begin at 3:15pm and conclude at 5:15pm with the expectation all debaters are collected no later than 5:25pm. In consultation with the coach and debaters, this afternoon is negotiated. Teams consist of four members. Junior and Middle School teams rotate through each speaking position to develop skills in debating, whereas the senior debaters can specialise to refine their skills. The fourth member has a vital position for debates as the chair or timekeeper which assists the adjudicator. QDU will only accept postponements for school events. Individual debater’s unavailability is not accepted. Therefore, the fourth member is to be prepared to debate at the last minute.

More information about this competition can be found at https://www.qdu.org.au/

For further information, please contact SRC Debating Coordinator via debating@stritas.qld.edu.au

Celebrating 100 Years of SRC in 2026

College Centenary

Since 1926, our St Rita's College community has been shaped by the vision and courage of the Presentation Sisters, guided by the values of St Rita and Nano Nagle, and brought to life through the dedication of our staff, students, and families. For over a century, St Rita’s College has educated, empowered, and inspired students to grow as confident, compassionate women of action.

2026 is a time to reflect on our rich history, to honour those who have come before us, and to give thanks for the enduring legacy they have gifted us.

We invite all members of our College community to join us throughout 2026 as we celebrate 100 years of St Rita’s College.

Alumnae - Reconnect With Rita's

Alumnae

St Rita’s College alumnae ties provide a network of support that extends far beyond graduation day. These ties span not only across Australia but across the globe, not only across cohorts but year levels and are a testament to the transformative power of education and the friendships forged at St Rita’s College.

Each year many alumnae celebrate their connection to the College through class reunions, College tours, and informal catch ups.

Our alumnae carry with them a sense of action, with many excelling in their chosen path and returning to the College to extend a guiding hand to current students. Whether they are sharing their professional experience, providing mentorship or contributing to our cocurricular program, all students benefit from the collective wisdom and ongoing connection of our passionate alumnae.

Each year we welcome back many alumnae who reconnect with the College as current parents.

If any new parents and guardians are past pupils, or know of any past pupils interested in connecting with the Alumnae Committee, please update your details via the College website or contact the Alumnae team.

Community Choir

Join the SRC Community Choir

St Rita’s College Music invites you to join the SRC Community Choir. Now in its third year, we invite all adult members of our extended SRC community to discover the joy of singing.

Whether you are an alumnae, staff member, future, current or past parent, or even a friend of the College, this community minded choir for women and men warmly welcomes seasoned vocalists and car-singing sensations. No previous vocal experience is required, just a sense of fun and willingness to learn.

Teachers from the College's Choral Program, led by Choir Director, Lou Wall, will guide the group as you develop vocal skills and experience the joy of making music together. Following a short rehearsal season, the choir will perform at the St Agatha’s Choral Concert, alongside student choirs, in March 2026.
