Learning in Primary
At St Rita’s College, our Primary curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, ignite passions, and empower every student to flourish.
Grounded in the Australian Curriculum (v.9), our program delivers a rich and diverse learning experience that supports, nurtures, and extends each student to reach her full potential.
Our Homeroom Teachers are Primary education specialists who work closely with expert Secondary staff to deliver a dynamic and cohesive curriculum. Students engage in all eight key learning areas:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Humanities and Social Sciences
- Health and Physical Education
- Technologies
- The Arts
- Languages
Through this holistic approach, we ensure that each student is exposed to a broad and balanced education, delivered in a way that connects learning across subject areas and fosters deep understanding.
Our students thrive in first-class facilities that spark imagination and deepen engagement. Whether it’s conducting experiments in our science laboratories, creating in our STEAM and Design spaces, or performing in our Music Suites and Visual Arts Studios, Primary students are encouraged to explore, question and express themselves across all learning areas.
In the Primary Years, we focus on helping each student discover and build on her unique strengths. With a wide variety of learning experiences available, every student can shine, whether this be through creative expression, academic inquiry, sporting pursuits or social justice.
Other opportunities
A highlight of the Year 5 curriculum is Amplify - a dynamic and transformative music program unique to St Rita’s College. Blending instrumental learning, public speaking and singing, Amplify is designed to develop creativity, executive functioning, social skills and confidence.
Alongside music opportunities, students are involved in our comprehensive sporting program which provide opportunities to build confidence, develop new skills and experience the benefits of physical activity.
Learning at St Rita’s College is supplemented through student-led Primary Clubs which provide inclusive, fun spaces for students to explore their interests. From building digital worlds in Minecraft Club, to getting in front of and behind the camera in Media Club, to creating the latest designs in Textile Club or sparking social change through Hopeful Hearts, there are ample opportunities for students to lead, connect and contribute beyond the classroom.
Learner Qualities
In the Primary Years, our students are exploring the qualities that support them in becoming effective learners in and out of the classroom. As part of their journey to becoming independent learners, our Year 5 and Year 6 students explore five Learner Qualities.
In our Primary classrooms, students and teachers focus on one Learner Quality each week, with all students striving to embody this quality in all areas of their learning. We recognise and celebrate students who have lived out these Learner Qualities in our Learner Quality Awards, which showcase student growth and achievement across the five learner qualities
The Learner Qualities are designed to support our girls as they grow into independent learners, and to help them focus on areas in which they may need practice. They encourage curiosity, build confidence, all within a supportive environment where the girls feel safe to ask questions, explore ideas, and take ownership of their learning.
College Library
In the Primary years, our Nano Nagle Library is used extensively to nurture curiosity and build foundational learning skills, with students engaging in a wide range of reading and inquiry activities. Each year, Book Week is a special highlight, offering our Primary students the chance to celebrate stories, deepen their love of reading, and connect with literature in meaningful and memorable ways.
We acknowledge the Turrbal and Jagera people, the traditional owners of the land where St Rita’s College now stands.
