Cocurricular Music Registration

Music Enrolment

All new students wishing to enrol in the Music program at St Rita's College are to complete an online Cocurricular Music Enrolment Form.

Enrolment in the program includes student participation in performance ensembles, and instrumental tuition. To be eligible for an instrumental ensemble, students must be actively learning their instrument either through the College or with an external teacher.

To assist with preparation for next year, it is preferable that enrolments are received before the end of Term 4. The final closing date for Music enrolments is the Friday of Week 1, Term 1.

  • A separate application should be completed for each instrument to be studied.
  • An enrolment form is required for a student who will be participating in choir.
  • Enrolment for continuing students, current Year 6 students, carries over and does not require a form to be completed, unless there is a change to the lesson type of their current enrolment.

See The Family Handbook for a comprehensive overview of our Music program, information on music tuition, ensembles and progression and development opportunities.

Incoming Year 7 students enrolling in the program, depending on their instrument, will automatically be placed into one of the ensembles listed below. Towards the end of Term 1, instrumental students (band and strings) who have shown necessary commitment and appropriate ability as identified by ensemble directors, may be invited to move to an intermediate ensemble. Adjustment to ensembles during Term 1 will only occur at the discretion of ensemble directors with all other ensemble placements occurring at the end of Term 3.

  • Band (Woodwind, Brass and Percussion) students - Prelude Winds
  • String Students - Prelude Strings
  • Guitar Students - Guitar Ensemble
  • Choir Students - Nano’s Voices

Students wishing to join a choir are not required to have voice lessons but are encouraged to consider lessons. An enrolment form is also required for a student who will be participating in choir.

Music Tuition

Tuition is provided across a wide range of instruments by experienced teachers who challenge students to reach their musical potential. Students who receive instrumental tuition through the College are required to participate in at least one Cocurricular Music ensemble, except for piano students. Participation in choirs is open to all students, regardless of whether they receive singing lessons. Instrumental tuition is delivered by experienced teachers and offered in both group and individual formats.

Group lessons:

  • Available for students in Years 5-9
  • Groups consist of 2-4 students, with an average of 3 per group
  • Groups may include students learning different instruments
  • Lesson duration: 30 minutes

Individual lessons:

  • Available to all year levels
  • Lesson duration options: 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes.
  • Piano tuition is only available as individual lessons.

All lessons are conducted in the purpose-built Music Centre on the top level of the Trinity building, and students perform in two Studio Concerts each year to showcase their progress. Tuition is available for:

  • Woodwind - Bassoon, Saxophone, Clarinet, Oboe, Flute
  • Brass - Tuba, Euphonium/Baritone, Trombone, French Horn, Trumpet
  • Strings - Double Bass, Cello, Viola, Violin
  • Percussion - Tuned and Untuned
  • Piano (Individual lessons only)
  • Voice
  • Guitar - Acoustic finger-picking style
  • Music Theory

 Music Ensembles

Cocurricular Music is an ensemble-based program, which has development pathways for students from their early years of learning through to advanced ensembles across the three streams of Band, Strings and Choirs. For those students who like to challenge themselves there are also specialist extension ensembles. We set high expectations and provide the support necessary for students to achieve performance excellence in solo, ensemble, and broader musical contexts.

Once proficiency on an instrument has been achieved, students enrolled in the Cocurricular Music Program are required to become a member of at least one ensemble. The program is divided into three performance streams: Band, Strings and Choir. Within each stream exists a core ensemble along with extension and chamber ensembles.

  • Students nominating for representative school sport should be currently participating in their chosen sport at a high competitive level and be able to demonstrate their experience, achievements, and commitment in that sport
  • Schools are generally permitted to submit up to four nominations per sport and age group to regional trials.
