Year of Courage - Leading with Courage
From our College Leadership Team
Principal - Mrs Maree Trims

Embarking on my role as Principal of St Rita’s College has been an exhilarating and inspiring journey during my first month. It has been a pleasure witnessing the incredible talents and passion within the College community. I have spent much time exploring academic pursuits, cocurricular activities, and community engagement and I am filled with optimism for the year ahead. Together, our parents, students and staff are fostering an environment that nurtures not only academic excellence but also personal growth and empowerment for our students.
During the past month I have invited different groups of staff to morning tea, which has been an enriching experience, providing invaluable insights into the collective spirit and expertise that defines our College. Engaging with the different faculty groups and support staff has enabled me to feel their dedication and passion for our students and their work at St Rita’s College. The meetings have allowed an open dialogue, shared vision, and a commitment to fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment. These meetings will continue in the coming weeks.
School excursions and incursions hold paramount importance in the overall educational experience, providing students with unique opportunities to expand their learning beyond the classroom walls. In the past four weeks our Primary Years students have visited Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and the Planetarium. Our Year 7 students went to camp at Mapleton and spent a day touring Brisbane on their Liveability excursion. Year 8 students have enjoyed a Mediaeval History Incursion and Drama students have attended live performances. Some of our Year 11 students attended the Sofitel Live and Learn Experience, and the Hospitality students were treated to a mocktail workshop. There have been many other enriching activities within our curriculum. Excursions and incursions stimulate curiosity, foster a deeper understanding of subject content, and promote experiential learning. Incursions, which bring external experts or performers into our school environment, provide students with exposure to diverse perspectives and talents. Both contribute to the holistic development of students by enhancing their social skills, building teamwork, and cultivating a sense of awe and wonder for their subject area.
I am also pleased to announce that one of my goals for this year was to establish a Student Representative Council (SRC) for all students. The first meeting of the SRC was held today. Our Year 6 House Representatives will represent the Primary Years and students from Years 7 - 12 nominated to be on the Council with a vote selecting four students from each year level. The SRC will enable students in these year levels to have a leadership role within the College, and for student voice to continue to be prioritised. The SRC will meet twice a term to discuss issues important to students.
Yours Sincerely,
Mrs Maree Trims
Principal
Parents and Friends Association
The Parents and Friends Association plays a pivotal role in fostering a supportive and engaging environment at St Rita’s. The collaboration between parents and friends not only enhances the overall educational experience for our students but also contributes significantly to school community wellbeing, facilities and programs. I am grateful to the generosity of the parents and friends who attended our first meeting for the year. The nomination and inclusion of parents and carers in the executive positions of the P&F are of utmost importance. These leaders serve as the driving force behind organising events, fundraisers, and initiatives that enrich the school experience for both students and their families. They bring diverse perspectives and skills, ensuring the P&F can effectively address the evolving needs of our school community.
The P&F AGM is being held on Tuesday 12 March at 6.00pm and I encourage parents and guardians to consider nominating for one of the positions. I would also encourage parent involvement in our parent sub-committees: Music and Sport. If your daughter is involved in either of these cocurricular programs, this is a wonderful way for you to get involved with your daughter’s passions and interests.
Parents and Friends Welcome Function

I warmly invite all parents and guardians to join me at our Parents and Friends Welcome Function on Friday 15 March from 7.00pm - 9.00pm. This is an opportunity to meet other parents, College staff and members of the newly elected P&F Executive Committee and Alumnae Committee. Ticket price includes a welcome drink and light canapes. I hope you are able to join us and I look forward to meeting many new members of our College community and reconnecting with returning families at this event.
Deputy Principal - Studies, Mrs Lara Morgan

Approaching Assessment
As we near the end of Week 6, there is a need for students to increase their study and their attention to assessment. Parents, students, and staff all have a part to play to partner and support our students to achieve their very best.
Students are encouraged to:
- Display their assessment calendar in a place that they will often see to remind them of upcoming due dates – the fridge is a great place to display it
- Plan their study, using this assessment calendar - this should then direct students to upcoming assessment, allowing them to backward map checkpoints, draft dates and practice tests
- Engage in study and assessment every night, without distraction – surrender mobile phones, revise work completed in class, and start assignments early
- Commit to active attendance and engaged participation in class to get the most out of learning time – ask questions and speak up
Parents are encouraged to:
- Proactively get medical certificates if children are unwell – these will be required for extensions
- Ensure students maintain healthy sleep patterns – even late nights on weekends can make students tired during the week
- Check in with their children regarding due dates and assessment
- Positively reinforce good study habits – bring in a snack while they are working
Teachers will:
- Have all resources and learning materials available to students on their class page and unit course page on MySRC
- Remind students of our Assessment Guidelines, which is accessible on MySRC/Policies and Procedures/Assessment Guidelines
- Help students – if you are struggling, email or speak to your teacher and ask for help
Let’s all work together to ensure our students start the year strong.
Acting Assistant Principal - Mission, Mrs Lorraine Specogna

In this year’s message for Lent from Pope Francis, he reminds us of the Exodus out of Egypt and the People of God receiving release from their bondage to one of freedom. Pope Francis reminds us that this season is a time when we realise the hopelessness of others and how we can lead them out of the desert to freedom. “Today too, the cry of so many of our oppressed brothers and sisters rises to heaven. Let us ask ourselves: Do we hear that cry? Does it trouble us? Does it move us? All too many things keep us apart from each other, denying the fraternity that, from the beginning, binds us to one another.” (Francis, 2024) The message identifies the globalisation of indifference that societies of the world are becoming and asks us two questions, “Where are you?” (Gen 3:9) and “Where is your brother?” (Gen 4:9). His Lenten message reminds us to evaluate our attraction to the security of familiar things, to the detriment of our freedom and that of others. It asks of us: “Do I want a new world?” (Francis, 2024) Lent is a time to act: a “season of conversion”
(Francis, 2024). Pope Francis calls us to be the hope for others who are struggling, “we need courage to think like this …. for faith and charity take hope… ” (Francis, 2024)
Project Compassion
This year, Project Compassion brings you the stories of three resilient women from three different corners of the world. They are facing vastly different challenges but are all united by one dream: to create a better tomorrow for all future generations.
Meet Ronita from the Philippines. Ronita lives with her husband and two children in a barangay (local district) in Quezon City, which is situated in Metro Manila in the Philippines. She went back to school to finish her education so that she could earn income to support her children.
Meet Leaia from Samoa. Not having access to a reliable source of clean water was very difficult for Leaia and her family. But, with the support of Caritas Australia, a water tank was installed at their home, improving their health and living conditions.
Meet Memory from Malawi. Memory, the eldest daughter from a rural Malawian family, trained to become a carpenter and is now a trailblazer for future generations of women in her village.
All donations of $2 and over are tax deductible. There are many ways to consider how to raise your donation - perhaps giving up all or some of our daily coffee or special treat purchases between now and Easter.
$25 can support a farmer to buy a pack of disaster resilient seeds in Malawi.
$35 can provide hand sanitiser to increase hygiene and sanitation for community members in Samoa.
$50 can support a young mother in the Philippines to attend basic education classes to assist with acquiring employment.
Primary Years News
Head of Primary - Ms Georgina Howard

As we pass the halfway point in Term 1, it has been wonderful to see our Year 5 and Year 6 students settle into their learning and to the familiarity of their new classrooms and year levels. With Assessment Tasks beginning this week, I encourage families to revisit the Term Overviews for each Year Level and to check their daughter’s calendars on MySRC for Assessment Dates. Please see the recent notification on MySRC News for details on how to access your daughter’s assessment calendar. Term Overviews can be found on the Primary Years page on the Parent Hub.
As mentioned at our recent Parent Information Evening, we will be utilising MySRC News as our main form of communication for Primary parents and students. Primary Years Study Skills Information Session
We are grateful to Ms Amanda Wallas, Head of Program - Study Skills, for supporting our Primary Years students and families by facilitating the Primary Study Skills Information Session on Wednesday evening. The Information Session was provided to support your daughters in building strong, sustainable and effective study skills and habits. If you were unable to attend, please find resources on the Study Skills page on MySRC.
Year 5 Excursion to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Our Year 5 students enjoyed a wonderful excursion to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary as part of their Science studies. Students explored the different types of habitats that animals live in and studied the adaptations that assist them to survive in their natural environment. Students explored the varying adaptations found across many different species and were able to enjoy hands-on learning experiences with a green tree frog named Dennis, a tree snake named Sandy and a koala named Hamlet.
As a cohort, our Year 5s were proud representatives of the College community and are to be commended on their manners, their participation and their enthusiasm for learning. Thank you to Mrs Hukins, Miss Fardoulys, Mrs Apps, Ms Downs and our parent helpers for facilitating such an exciting and enjoyable day out for our Year 5 students.

Primary Awards
We congratulate the following students who received Learner Quality Awards this week:
Ciara M, Amber C, Emma K, Aayarah F, Greer M, Vivienne G, Piper K, Charlotte B, Ebony A, Mia C, Chloe M, Alfia C, Salene K
Mission - Year 5 Retreat
Retreat days provide an opportunity to temporarily leave behind the usual distractions and allow time for inner reflection and personal growth. On Wednesday 21 February, Year 5 were led by David Jorna (Project Hatch) on their first Retreat focusing on beginning at a new school. Students enjoyed participating in many activities focused on building confidence and encouraging them to step outside of their comfort zone and embrace opportunities to get to know their Year 5 peers. Students explored how when close friends make new friends, it is not losing the close friend, but an opportunity to make more friends who also like similar things as themselves. Lots of new friends were found with the common reaction of “oh, me too!!” heard throughout the day.
The students reflected on their own courage, recognising that they already have all the courage they need to tackle many obstacles and new experiences. They explored the concept that true courage lies in the ability to tap into their courage reservoir enabling them to foster and embrace an open mindset. They practiced the Think, Be, Act (Live Your Code) qualities to do life better. They learnt that when you are your best, you inspire others. The day ended with the students making their own personalised Courage Placemat with their Think, Be, Act qualities to better understand themselves, others, and the positive influence they can create.

Faculty News
Head of Social Science - Mr John Mundell
In a captivating journey through time, our Year Social Science 8 students recently immersed themselves in the rich tapestry of the Middle Ages during an unforgettable incursion.
Expert presenters transported our students back in time, shedding light on the social, cultural, and technological aspects of the Middle Ages. From the feudal system to the intricacies of medieval warfare, our Year 8s eagerly absorbed the fascinating details of this historical period.
A highlight of the day was learning about the gruesome remedies for the Black Death and just how flawed the medicine and hygiene of the day was.
Hands-on activities allowed students to experience first hand what life was like to live during this time. Students were able to try on clothing, armour and helmets, hold swords and axes and examine other artefacts from the time.
This incursion not only enriched the students' historical knowledge but also sparked their curiosity and imagination. The Year 8 cohort left the event with a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the Middle Ages, fostering a love for History that will undoubtedly endure throughout their academic journey.

Head of Pathways & Careers - Mrs Melanie Sax-Wood
Save the Date - Year 10 Careers Day, Wednesday 12 June
In Term 2, in the lead up to senior subject selection the Year 10 girls will be involved in Careers Day. This day features guest speakers working with the girls in small groups. Numerous industries are represented and based on the request of the girls. Many of the guest speakers are parents, community partners and Alumnae.
If you would like to assist us by speaking with the girls so they can discover greater insight into particular jobs/career please email Melanie Sax-Wood at sax@stritas.qld.edu.au
Sofitel Trip
From the 18 - 23 February, 43 St Rita’s year 11 Diploma of Business and Hospitality attended a ‘Live and Learn Program’ at Sofitel Noosa Resort. Students were provided the opportunity to work in a variety of different departments including Food and Beverage, Concierge, Guest Experience, Talent and Culture, Marketing, Events, Housekeeping, Finance and Day Spa. These real-life hands-on activities enrich the students’ understanding of the workings of a prominent 5-star Resort both from a hospitality and business perspective.
Along with the practical work experience students also engage in an induction and hotel tour on their first day and interact with the General Manager in his morning briefing with the Heads of Departments. Much insight is gathered here. This is a very rare opportunity and hallmarks the value of our ongoing partnership with the resort. 28 years on and developing each year, we are proud of this relationship and how the students respond to the privilege of living and learning in a prominent workplace.
The Sofitel staff very generously give of their time to host some Masterclasses with the students. This year Talent and Culture’s Director, Emily Carter, presented and discussed aspects of employment to sharpen the students’ knowledge and awareness. Hearing tips first-hand from a renowned employer has impact for their future. The other Masterclass saw the students learning the finer craft of barista work and Marilyn, the pastry chef, guided them to craft a traditional French pastry in her session.
Working in a 5-star establishment also requires 5-star grooming. The students were very conscious of the high expectations and were able to mirror the behaviour of the ambassadors they worked alongside. The longer-term effect of the program allows teachers to reflect on and use the experiences gained in everyday classes back at school. For students we see them grow in confidence and self-esteem over the program. The skills they develop can assists them in their part-time employment and the awareness may assist them to discover career options they hadn’t considered.
Thanks to our dedicated staff who assisted with the planning and supervision of this trip, particularly Mrs Kylie O’Hare.

Options Career Information Bulletin & App
Each fortnight the Year 10, 11 & 12 students receive the Options Career Information Bulletin via email. It is stacked with the latest information gathered from numerous sources; local, state, national and international. At the beginning of the year, it was highlighted with the Year 12 girls the importance of keeping up to date with careers information and not leaving things until the end of Term 3 to get sorted for their post-school options. They need to be researching the best options for themselves for post-school. This is one great resource that they have available to you each fortnight. All Year 10s have downloaded the app in our first Careers lesson and have been asked to share this with their parents.
Each edition includes information relating to skill shortage areas and the projected job demands. The defence forces highlight important information. Australian National University (ANU)

Like many other universities ANU are harnessing the soft skills of university applicants and including this as part of their application process. Universities are beginning to see the benefits of recruiting well-rounded students to their courses. For students to apply through the direct entry system at ANU they must meet the co-curricular or service requirements which includes community engagement, inclusion and awareness of diversity, communication, leadership, personal responsibility, teamwork and creative and critical thinking. Click here or visit Programs and Courses here for their courses.
Tax File Number
Students often ask about how they get a Tax File Number (TFN). The process for applying for a TFN had changed, and schools can no longer verified students. I encouraged all Year 10, 11 & 12 girls to apply for a TFN even if they currently do not have a job. This is a simple process and once they get a job they do not really want to be paying more tax than necessary while waiting for their TFN to be processed. Students are required to have a TFN when they enrol for tertiary places post school.
Outdoor Education
Year 7 Camp
Our Year 7 students embarked on their first high school outdoor education camp. What an unforgettable experience during their three day and two night camp at QCCC Mapleton. For some students, it was their first time in a tent and for others it was their first time away from their parents, making the experience memorable and so worthwhile. The students stepped out of their comfort zones and took on a variety of challenges including canoeing, abseiling, giant swing, bush skills. The focus on camp was about building connections, teamwork, leadership, problem solving while making new friends. On behalf of all of the staff that attended, we are all incredibly proud of all students in Year 7 watching them embrace new challenges was truly inspiring.

Library News
Thank you to all staff and students who helped us celebrate Library Lovers. The theme this year was “Growing with the Library”. We wanted to celebrate the growth that we all go through in our journey as readers. The week began with a delivery of badges and chocolates to the staff with an invitation to morning tea, as a thank you for their continued support. The students were very enthusiastic to place their guesses at how many bookworms were in the jar and enjoyed borrowing mystery books as a ‘blind date with a book’. Our Primary Years students had fun creating ‘love bugs’ and competing in book bingo!

Head of The Arts - Ms Bethany Dutton
The Year 12 Drama class viewed Shake and Stir's performance of Animal Farm. This performance is their stimulus performance for their dramatic concept project. This term they have explored theatre of social comment and the way Epic theatre challenges its audience. They will use this performance to base their devising process of their own concept which expresses a political viewpoint.

Year 8 students were an active audience for Shake and Stir's - The Twits in the Trinity Auditorium. Mr and Mrs Twit are the nastiest couple you could ever hope (not) to meet. Both are on a quest to be meaner than the other – but, is there someone out there who can out-twit the Twits? Full of trickery and wickedly-funny pranks, Dahl’s adored classic encourages us to treat others with love and care and proves that if you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams. This performance assists our students to understand the drama styles of realism and melodrama through fractured fairytales in preparation for their own performances of their own piece.

Edgar Allan Poe's Hilariously Gruesome tales of Mystery and Imagination was presented by Grin and Tonic in the Trinity auditorium. This is a show which was viewed by Year 9 Drama students as part of their unit on Gothic and Non-realism theatre. This was a magical musical comedic performance that the St Rita's students will use this to inform their own devised work as a theatre maker.

Music News - Mr Craig Kennedy, Head of Cocurricular Music
Jazz Ensemble Workshop
Members of the Jazz Ensemble were fortunate to receive a workshop conducted by an expert clinician from the Jazz Music Institute (JMI). This is a highly valuable experience for young musicians to learn and develop lifelong ensemble skills in Jazz and broader performance opportunities. The workshop was successful in instilling deeper musical understanding within the student musicians, as well as building their confidence and comradery as a musical team. St Rita's Big Band are looking forward to their upcoming workshop, which will be complemented by a combined performance evening on Monday 18 March.

St Agatha’s Choral Concert
Our choral students and special guests, the St Rita’s Community Choir, are looking forward to performing at the upcoming St Agatha’s Choral Concert on Monday 11 March at 6.30pm. This concert, held in the beautiful acoustics of St Agatha’s Church, will be a feast of choral music featuring over 150 singers and a wide range of musical genres. Entry is free however donations will be collected for our whole College initiative for Term 1, Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion. We hope to see you at this evening where our five College choirs will share with you some of their new repertoire for the year.

Music Support Group - New Members Welcome and Required
The Music Support Group is in urgent need of new members to continue their wonderful work of supporting the music program. This group is an essential part of the music program that runs the Rita’s Longest Lunch and organises hospitality at Music events to raise funds to assist with the provision of instrumental resources, large scale productions and special workshops.
The Music Support Group AGM will be held online on Wednesday 6 March at 7.00pm. As there will be several essential committee positions being vacated by incumbents, we are appealing to all parents of our music community to consider attending and nominating for a committee position. With the prospect of committee positions not being filled, we are hopeful that more parents will become involved to assist in continuing the valued support the group has given to many previous music students over many years.
The MySRC calendar entry to this meeting contains the online link to join the meeting on the night. The committee looks forward to welcoming many new faces at this meeting.

From the Alumnae President
On behalf of the St Rita’s College Alumnae Committee I wish to welcome all new and returning alumnae who are now current parents of the College. I hope Term 1, 2024 has started well for you and your family.
It is always lovely to reconnect with past students and it is wonderful to see so many alumnae continuing your association with the College and sharing this connection with your daughters. Your presence in our community is a testament to the enduring spirit and legacy of our school and we hope your daughter enjoys her time at St Rita's.
We believe that the unique perspective and experiences of past students adds invaluable insights and energy to our College community and we invite you to play a role in strengthening the alumnae program of our College.
Whether you are interested in event planning, mentorship programs, or simply sharing your stories and those of other alumnae, the Alumnae Committee offers a variety of ways to get involved and make a meaningful impact. If you are interested in learning more and joining the Alumnae Committee please register your interest and a Committee member will be in touch.
Once again, welcome to all new and returning past students who are current parents, I look forward to connecting with you throughout the year and hope to see you at the Parent Welcome Function in March.

Seeking Parent Assistance for Walkout

Each year the College holds WalkOut, a compulsory Mission and Community event for all Years 5-12 students of the College. This colourfully themed event is a highlight of our calendar and a key fundraiser for student nominated charities. Walkout commences at Kedron and sees students walk through local streets back to the College. This year it will be held on Sunday 26 May. Further details to follow.
Parent coordinator, Mrs Carla Burns (Year 11 and 12 Parent) is seeking support from an energetic and organised parent volunteer willing to transition into the coordinator role for this annual event. Detailed event processes are in place and Carla’s support is available to ensure an easy transition. Ideally this would be an annual commitment to a few hours a week in preparation for the event with on the day coordination to ensure safe and enjoyable execution.
If you are able to help please email the College with your details.
