Year of Simplicity - Travelling Lightly

From our College Leadership Team
Principal - Mrs Dale Morrow
Acting Deputy Principal - Studies, Mr Martin Lobb

Principal - Mrs Dale Morrow

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have had a very eventful term so far and the last few weeks has seen our students participate in a range of activities. The Athletics team had an empathic win at the CASSSA Track and Field carnival. St Rita’s College won every age group except one and the cheering and school spirit at the track was wonderful to witness. My appreciation goes to the coaches, the senior students and of course every athlete who gave her best on the day. Last weekend also saw the music students participate in their major event for the year, the Queensland Catholic Colleges’ Musical Festival. It was an absolute pleasure to enjoy the many performances from our choirs and instrumental bands and ensembles. The standard of Music at the College continues to improve under the direction of Mr Craig Kennedy and his tutors. The students are to be commended on their hard work and consistency in attending rehearsals.

Friday night saw 55 students cut their and donate their hair for a great cause. The community raised over $40,000 to “rock the chop”. Friday was also filled with much excitement as our primary students and staff enjoyed book week.

I was interested to read an article of the impact of AI on the global workforce. A new study by computing giant IBM found that about 40% of the global workforce or about 1.4 billion of the total 3.4 billion work-capable individuals will have to be reskilled in the next three years.

The figures came from a joint survey between the IBM Institute for Business Value and Oxford Economics of about 3,000 global C-suite executives across 20 industries and 28 countries from all major regions in December 2022 and January 2023. A huge majority of the executives surveyed, 87%, agreed reskilling will be necessary as job roles will be augmented rather than outright replaced by AI. Entry-level jobs in 2025 will experience the heaviest impact as well. The study said that what many organizations are struggling with now is identifying which skills already exist within their teams and what doesn’t. “Capturing and identifying skills” across the organization is the first step, in order to later decide what areas to fill with new talent, and which areas might be better suited for internal mobility than newly hiring.

IBM said organizations that succeed at reskilling their workers, with an emphasis on AI, report a higher growth rate of 36% than the average.

‘AI won’t replace people – but people who use AI will replace people who don’t’

IBM also cited much earlier figures from the World Economic Forum, estimating that between 2020 and 2025, 85 million jobs globally would have been disrupted, while creating 97 million new job roles. This new era, IBM said, is “the age of the augmented workforce—an era when human-machine partnerships boost productivity and deliver exponential business value.” WEF predictions for the years 2023 to 2028 are in line with IBM’s own findings. The WEF said that about 44% or workers’ skills will be disrupted in those years.

What skills are more important? IBM found that “intriguingly,” the need for STEM skills have dropped significantly, with STEM proficiency falling from being the most important in 2016 to 12th place in 2023. “As technology becomes more user-friendly, employees are also able to do more with less advanced technical skills. No-code software development platforms, for instance, let people without a programming background create business-critical prototypes and apps,” the study explained.

Basic computer and software application skills, which was the second most important skill in 2016, also dropped to 11th place in 2023.

People skills have increased greatly in importance, with time management skills and ability to prioritize, ability to work in team environments, and ability to communicate effectively, rising to the top 3 spots.

https://www.rappler.com/technology/ibm-2023-study-ai-impact-global-workforce/

These trends will need to be monitored by educationalist as we navigate a world that is changing at an incredible pace. Our students are well placed to adapt to these trends with skills of collaboration and teamwork encouraged and developed at St Rita’s.

God bless

Mrs Morrow

Acting Deputy Principal - Studies, Mr Martin Lobb

Mentoring - Year 12

Over the next few weeks Year 12 students will have the opportunity to meet with their teacher mentor to discuss their progress this year and to look at strategies going forward. During these Mentoring meetings, students and teachers will:

  • Check in on their Trial and External exam preparations.
  • Discuss the student’s academic results for Unit 3 and Unit 4.
  • Discuss, for ATAR eligible students, individual ATAR estimates. These estimates are based on their IA1, IA2 and unconfirmed IA3 results.
  • Check the student’s QTAC intentions and preferences.
  • Set goals for the remaining weeks of the Year 12 journey.

In some cases, this can be a difficult conversation – ATAR estimates may not yet be what a student has aimed for, or there can be concern over QTAC preferences and after school choices, and sometimes it can just be the realization that the end of school is approaching fast. The job of the mentor in these cases is not to judge or make decisions for the student, but rather discuss and suggest strategies and plans to help their mentees move forward.

The teachers at St Rita’s College find mentoring a richly rewarding experience and value the time spent with the students. I know we all wish our students the very best over the coming months.

Subject Changes

Please note that during Mrs Mel Sax-Wood's upcoming leave, 7 September - 11 October, all subject changes (including intended changes for 2024) must come to Martin Lobb, Acting Deputy Principal

Head of Primary - Ms Georgina Howard

It is always an exciting time in the Primary Years. This term, our Year 5 and 6 students have continued to share their enthusiasm for learning by creating multiple new lunchtime initiatives. Each initiative is student-led, from the initial idea to the lunchtime activities and planning, and we are thoroughly enjoying seeing their interests shine!

Student interest and advocation has led to the creation of three new initiatives, and, when combined with our Mini Vinnies Group, provide the following lunchtime activity opportunities:

Monday

Hopeful Hearts

Learning about inspirational women and sharing our learning with others

Wednesday

Primary Textiles Club

Learning how to sew, crochet or knit! Beginners and experts all welcome.

Thursday

Mini Vinnies

Learning how to give back to our community and support those less fortunate

Friday

Primary Minecraft Club

Sharing digital creativity and techniques, learning how to utilise our skills to collaborate and grow

We are very proud of our Primary girls for their initiative and drive in creating these opportunities for themselves and their peers.

National Science Week

National Science week is a big event in the science calendar each year. This year the theme was “Innovations: powering future industries.” With the theme of innovations in mind, a number of activities were conducted throughout the week including: bridge building, balloon rockets, designing a poster and of course, a St Rita’s Science tradition of innovative sweet making.

Students designed amazing bridges made of fruit pastilles and toothpicks and our winners for holding the greatest mass were Team 1: Aoife C, Olivia S and Emma C and Team 2: Jemima L and Bianca A.

Balloon racers were also constructed during science week . Students constructed balloon racers using only: a straw, string, a balloon and sticky tape.

Science Week was wrapped up on Friday by making sherbet and honey comb.

Petunia Pride Primary Plant Competition

The Science ambassadors Amara, Hannah, Charlotte, Sarah, Kara and Lilianna have also been busy organising a Petunia Pride Primary Plant Growing competition. Each primary class has it own pot and plant to look after. At the end of term 3, the best class pot will win a prize! May the best gardeners win.

Many thanks to the Science Ambassadors, our science laboratory technicians ,Margaret Walters and Davinder Kaur, and all of the science teachers who facilitate the many experiences for the St Rita’s students.

Science Extension Opportunities

A number of science extension opportunities have been posted on MySRC including:

The Science Experience for Year 9 and 10 students in Brisbane. The program runs for 3 days from 16 -18 January. More details can be found here. Students can apply online here.

During the September holidays Griffith University is also offering on-line academic bootcamps for Senior Science and Math's. Further details can be found here

Religious Education - Mrs Maree Habgood, Head of Religion

Religion at St Rita’s College has been busy over that last few months with both students and teachers developing skills and learning through visits and welcoming visitors.

A select group of Year 11 Study of Religion (SOR) students attended the University of Queensland World Religions Symposium in July. Students were able to attend a range of presentations from UQ SOR lecturers examining areas such as Islam and Society; Science and Religion Conflict; Hinduism: Sacred Texts and The Ethics & Reception of Job. These sessions enhanced student understanding in readiness for their continued study of SOR. Equally important, students got a taste of university life, being inspired in equal parts by the lecturers and the beautiful sandstone surrounds.

In August, the Religion Faculty and Primary staff jointly welcomed Phillip Zavelsky from the Brisbane Hebrew Congregation of the Brisbane Synagogue for professional development. In this we highlighted the importance of lifelong learning and dialogue between religious communities. Phillip spoke beautifully of his faith, guiding teachers in how best to use our newly acquired sacred objects in the classroom, with respect and dignity.

Outdoor Education

Year 9 Camp

Year 9 Camp was held at QCCC Noosa from 23 to 25 August. The focus of this camp is on team building, overcoming obstacles, enhancing communication skills and developing leadership capacity. There is also a large focus on cultural activities run by Triballink with students participating in both daytime cultural activities and a Dance Troupe around the Bon Fire with them. This camp is part of part of our sequential Outdoor Education Program and students built on previous camp experiences and embraced being safely outside of their comfort zone when sleeping both nights in a tent, cooking all meals around the campfire and being away from the comforts of home. It is hoped they will cherish the memories of the time in the outdoors they spent with friends and away from technology while at camp. We are very grateful for the staff that attended this camp to support the students throughout the experience.

The tournament draw and details will be published closer to the time, but it promises to be a great spectacle of rugby.

Netball

What a nail biting end to the Club Netball season! We had 4 teams through to the Preliminary Finals and each team left everything on the court. 11.1 (SRC 14) 11.3 (SRC 16) 13.2 (SRC 7) and 12.1 (SRC 10). The scores were tight all the way through the games, and we were unlucky not to come away with any wins. The girls were amazing and I hope they had so much fun, we ended up with all 4 teams coming 3rd, a great result!  A big thank you to our coaches for all the work they have put in over the season. We look forward to coming back even stronger next year, keep an eye out for sign ups in Term 4
