Welcome to Term 1, 2024 Welcome to Term 1, 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2024 academic year. I hope that the Christmas break has been restful and a time to rejuvenate for the year ahead. I am looking forward to welcoming our new students and families to the College and reconnecting with students and parents in my new role as College Principal. The College theme for this year is ‘Leading with Courage’ and draws inspiration from St Rita and our College pillar of Courage.

In the Christian tradition, courage is exemplified through the unwavering faith and bravery of individuals who, inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ, face adversity with steadfast resolve, trusting in divine strength and purpose.

"To have courage for whatever comes in life, everything lies in that." - St. Teresa of Avila

We will continue to unpack our theme of courage as the year progresses and it is my wish for each and every member of our College Community to embrace a courageous spirit as we strive to be people of actions not words.

Academic Timetables and Classes

In preparation for the academic year, students will be able to access their timetables in MySRC, on Monday 22 January.

A great deal of time, effort and consideration has gone into the creation of classes for 2024, including:

  • productive and unproductive partnership analysis
  • academic results and relationships
  • feedback from 2023 academic staff
  • availability of staffing
  • contribution and review by the Pastoral and Teaching and Learning teams.

The College’s approach to developing classes focusses on students developing new skills, relationships and resilience. Changes to classes after the publication date is not a recommended practice by experts in child / adolescent development.

There are several strategies parents can employ to support young people as they transition into a new year level/school. The following articles provide some helpful information.

Students new to St Rita’s College in 2024 will gain access to MySRC once they have their school device and logins. Parents of new students will also be able to access student timetables through MySRC from Monday afternoon.

Subject Changes

For students in Years 8-9, subject changes must be completed by Friday 2 February. Subject changes at the beginning of the year are only possible within the confines of the class allocations made and will be processed in order of receipt.

Students must complete the Request for Change of Subject form located on MySRC in the Parent Hub under Curriculum.

Absent and Late students
Students who are Unwell
Operoo - Online consent and care information
Qkr! App - Online ordering for the Pantry and College Boutique

Student Imagery Permission

A notification has been sent from Operoo requesting whether you consent or not to your daughter’s involvement in the life of the College being promoted or shared.

Please complete this by Wednesday 31 January.

Parents/Guardians wishing to withdraw image consent at any time during the school year must inform the Principal in writing.

Procedure for Parents coming on to Campus

All parents and visitors coming onto campus are to arrive to College Main Reception at the Nagle Building (not Student Services) and Sign In and Sign Out regardless of the purpose or length of your visit. This procedure is required even if you are dropping off an essential item to your child.

When visiting campus parents are to park in the Enderley Road Drop Off Zone and walk to Main Reception.

Matters such as forgotten lunches and forgotten uniform items can be addressed by students visiting Student Services for assistance and do not require parents to come to campus.

Absent and Late students

The College must be informed of all student absences, including late arrivals and early departures. Permission for late arrival or early departure is only granted for medical or other necessary appointments that cannot be facilitated before or after school hours.

Parents and Guardians are expected to notify the College of their child’s absence, late arrival or early departure before 8:30am via the Online Absentee Form, accessible from the College Website, MySRC and College App.

Students who are Unwell

The College takes the possible spread of illness seriously and students who are unwell must remain at home. Parents and Guardians are asked to notify the College of their child’s absence, late arrival or early departure before 8:30am via the Online Absentee Form, accessible from the College Website, MySRC and College App. The College does not accept telephone or email advice of absence.

  • If your child becomes unwell with any illness whilst at school, they will be assessed by the College Nurse and parents/ guardians will be contacted for immediate collection of their child if it is deemed they should not be at school. The Health Centre is for temporary respite only.
  • Parents are to park in Enderley Road Drop Off Zone and walk into campus to collect their child unless otherwise advised by the College Nurse. Vehicles will not be permitted on campus during school hours.

Operoo - Online consent and care information

Please ensure your student’s medical and contact details are up to date in Operoo.

When creating or updating your daughter's Operoo profile, please ensure the email address you enter is the same as the email address held by the College database. This is important to allow the information you provide in Operoo to sync with College systems.

You are also encouraged to enter a Secondary Contact’s email address and mobile number. This person should be the official Secondary Contact you have lodged with the College and not someone such as an Aunt or Uncle who is an Emergency Contact. (In most circumstances, Mum or Dad is the Primary Contact and visa versa for the Secondary Contact.) Emails and SMS will be sent to this Secondary Contact for notification purposes only. This person will not be able to view or edit the student’s profile nor view and respond to forms sent out by the system. Even though Operoo states Secondary Contacts as ‘Optional’, having this entered is beneficial for the College if we need to use Operoo to urgently email or SMS parents in the event of a closure or other sudden whole-of-school circumstance.

Emergency Contacts should be persons other than the legal parents/carers - a trusted relative or friend who would ordinarily be able to attend the school to collect your child should the need arise and the parents are unavailable.

Operoo accounts are ‘owned’ by the parent. As such, the College can view information, but cannot alter information. This may only be done by the parent owner.

Qkr! App - Online ordering for the Pantry and College Boutique

A Qkr! account allows parents and guardians to pay for Pantry (Tuckshop) and Boutique (Uniform Shop) items using a credit or debit card without pre-loading funds to a third party account.

Download the Qkr! App from the App Store or Google Play and register an account to create student profiles. Note: You may already have a QKR! Account as the platform operates across schools.

New Families

Click here for step-by-step instructions for downloading the Qkr App to your device, creating student profile/s, and ordering and making payments. Parents who prefer to use web ordering can do so.

If you require assistance or have any questions, please contact the College IT Service Desk at helpdesk@stritas.qld.edu

Returning Families

The first time you place an order in 2024, you will be asked to update your student’s details with their correct year level.

Primary Years Before and After School Hours Expectations

We remind Primary Years families and students of the following College expectations for before and after school hours.

Before School

Primary students are not permitted on campus before 7.30am, unless they are participating in a registered before school activity.

From 7.30am, Primary students can be supervised in the Library before school.

From 8.00am, Primary students move to the Sr Assumpta Pavillion for supervised Primary play.

After School

Year 5: Year 5 students are to be collected via Primary Pickup from 3.20pm-3.40pm. Alternatively, Year 5 students can catch a bus home, or walk home if they have written permission from parents. If Year 5 students are to be collected with older sisters or students, please contact the Head of Primary to confirm the arrangement.

Year 6: Year 6 students are to be collected via Enderley Road Pick Up, via bus or walking home.

Please note that Primary students are not permitted in the Library after school, unless accompanied by an older sister. In Semester 2, Year 6 students will be permitted after school hours as part of their transition to Secondary school.

Cocurricular and extracurricular activities

We are proud to be offering cocurricular and extracurricular opportunities for your daughters.

If your daughter has cocurricular or extracurricular sessions after school, they are to be registered for that activity. All before and after school sessions have students registered on class rolls for safety and supervisory purposes.

It is the responsibility of parents to collect their daughters immediately following any after school sessions.

Please note that for safety reasons any Year 5 students who are on campus after 3.40pm, and are not registered for an after-school activity, will be sent to Student Services. Parents will be contacted.

Outside School Hours Care

We are mindful of the young age of our Primary students, the work lives of families and the active supervision required by our Primary students. If you require Outside School Hours Care, St Agatha’s OSHC is open for all St Rita’s students from 7.00am-8.30am each morning and 3.00pm-6.00pm each afternoon. Several Primary students utilise this option. Please contact St Agatha’s OSHC via 07 3326 9208 or clayfieldoshc@catholicearlyedcare.qld.edu.au for more information.

Uniform and Bag Expectations and Guidelines

All St Rita's College students are expected to maintain high standards of personal appearance and we ask that all parents and guardians support the College in ensuring that the uniform is worn each day in accordance with College regulations. Please note the uniform policy will be enforced.

Formal Dress – Please check the length of your daughter’s formal dress before returning to school.  The formal dress must be worn no shorter than mid-knee in length at all times. As such, it will need to be re-hemmed as your daughter grows throughout the year. The College Bike Pants are required to be worn under the formal dress every day.

Primary Skort – The Formal Skort must be worn no shorter than 2.5cm above the knee at all times. As such, it will need to be re-hemmed as your daughter grows throughout the year.

Formal Hats – The formal hat must meet acceptable standards, with no rips in the straw and no fraying on the headband or brim. Parents are requested to label their daughter’s name on the hat clearly under the inside lining on the straw, behind the hat band shadow with a black laundry marker. We request that parents and students do not write names under the hat brim or anywhere visible.  Students are to refrain from squashing her hat into her satchel or school bag, as doing so can break the crown of the hat. Hefty use of glue and stitching is not acceptable. The College does not endorse any hat repair businesses.

Cleaning the Formal Hat – Remove loose soil with a soft brush, Hand sponge with cold water, Use mild soap to remove spots, Dry naturally, preferably out of direct sunlight. Please do not wash the Formal Hat in the dishwasher. This breaks down the protective barrier and fibres of the hat, weakening the crown of the hat, which leads to breakages. Please do not tumble dry or dry clean.

Socks – Please ensure your daughter wears the correct socks with her formal uniform.  Plain white turnover socks or brown tights are to be worn with the school shoes. These items may be purchased from the Boutique or from retailers. Crew or sports socks are not allowed.  Brown socks must be worn with the College Slacks.

Earrings and Necklaces – One matching pair of stud earrings or sleepers may be worn only in the lobe of each ear. Earrings can be plain gold, silver or pearl studs no more than 6mm in size, or thin plain hinged gold or silver sleepers, no more than 12mm in size. No helix piercings including clear spacers can be worn.  Examples of the correct earrings are available to view at Student Services and the Boutique. A Christian religious necklace with medal or cross on a chain is allowed, but must be worn below the neckline of the uniform. Incorrect jewellery items will be confiscated in the first instance and items will be returned on the last day of the Term in which it was confiscated.

Bags – For the safety of students and teachers moving around campus, the only bag that is allowed to be carried between classes during the day is the Tech Satchel. Students are required to carry only two lessons of resources in their Tech Satchel at any one time or they may wish to carry their books in their arms between classes. All other bags are to be placed in their lockers during the school day. Teachers will be requesting students return their bags to their lockers if not adhered to. All students have an allocated lockable locker on campus which offers a secure location to store additional items such as their College bag, mobile phone, cocurricular uniforms, learning material and lunch box, negating the need to carry heavy bags throughout the campus each school day.

Swimming and Sport items are to be carried in the St Rita’s Sport Bag or Havasack. The use of St Rita’s College eco bags (no longer produced), unbadged satchels or any non-College carry bags are not permitted. Students are not permitted to carry non-College lunch bags outside of any school bag to and from school. These bags are to be stored in their lockers during the school day.

Sports Uniform – The Brown and White sports shirt is being phased out and is to only be worn by students in Years 9-12 in 2024. Other year levels are to wear their House shirts only. Sports specific shirts may be worn in competitive team sports.

Swimming – In 2024, it is compulsory for all students in Years 5 to 9 to wear a rashie for all water activities as per our Sun Safety Policy - “No rashie, no swim”. This includes at the College Inter-House Swimming Carnival.

Imagine singing in the beautiful St Agatha’s Church in a choir led by our vivacious choral director, Lou Wall. Don’t just imagine it, make it a reality and register today to join our inaugural St Rita’s College Community Choir for a short rehearsal season and performance in Term 1.

The first rehearsal is Monday 22 January from 7.00pm - 9.00pm.

Visit our website for further details and to register.

Drop Off, Pick Up and Parking

St Rita’s College has a Traffic Management Plan in place, mandated by the Planning and Environmental Court, which addresses traffic issues and formalises school policies in enhancing safety for both school traffic and local residents. Parent and student drivers are requested to drive safely and be particularly cautious of pedestrian traffic at drop off and pick up times.

  • Enderley Road has signage installed by Brisbane City Council providing a two-minute set-down zone to separate short term parking from all-day parking.
  • Parents are to adhere to the two-minute set-down zone timeframes between the College Enderley Road driveways. Failure to do so is in breach of Council laws. Please do not park or wait in this zone for any period longer than 2 minutes.
  • Flashing light school zone signs will be installed on Enderley Road as part of the Queensland Government commitment to improving school road safety. The installation of flashing light school zone signs is proven to improve visibility of school zones, serving as an active reminder for motorists to slow down. Please keep an eye out for the new signs and make sure you stick to the signed speed limit.
  • Drivers are not to stop or park in areas which are marked with yellow lines and/or ‘witches hats’, including the yellow lined resident driveways opposite the front of the College in Enderley Road.
  • Year 5 parents using the internal driveway pick up system in the afternoons are not to queue across the College driveway nor in Enderley Road waiting for the driveway boom gate to open. If the boomgate is down, please go around the block until it is opened.
  • Students are not to be driven into the College grounds. Pedestrian traffic only is permitted (except for delivery and staff vehicles).
  • Students must use the Assisted Crossing at the Pool end of Enderley Road to cross to and from the College.
  • No students are to enter or exit the College via the Stafford Street entrance as this is a high traffic area with staff cars entering and exiting the College.
  • Be respectful of our neighbours – don’t park, drop off or pick up across resident driveways.

Student Drivers

Cars driven by students are not to enter the school grounds. No student is to be a passenger in a student-driven car unless prior notification in writing is given to the Principal by the parents/carers of both the driver and the passenger(s).

The College encourages our student drivers to register their name and vehicle make/colour/registration with the Principal’s Assistant, Mrs Tuite. Residents will often telephone the College to report concerns with parking or obstruction to driveways. The College will then aim to locate the driver and rectify the problem. A driver register has often avoided residents contacting authorities regarding their concern.

To register your daughter driving to school and her vehicle, please email Mrs Tuite at principal@stritas.qld.edu.au

Transport Options

The Brisbane City Council bus route 300 services Alexandra Road, approx 200 metre safe walk from the College.

Updating Contact Details

It is important that parents/carers update the College with changes to home and/or work email addresses and telephone numbers. If a parent/carer needs to be contacted urgently due to illness or accident, telephone is used. Email is used for a variety of purposes including fortnightly distribution of the College newsletter, Verbis, and particularly by teaching staff to connect with parents. Please use the Update Details function in MySRC to make any changes.

Emergency Contacts should be persons other than the legal parents/carers - a trusted relative or friend who would ordinarily be able to attend the school to collect your child should the need arise and parents be unavailable.

MySRC

The College uses the student learning management system and parent portal, MySRC, to keep students and parents informed. Each parent and guardian has a unique login. If you have forgotten your password, MySRC has a function on the sign in page to assist with forgotten passwords. If you are still unable to sign in there is a Support and Feedback button at the bottom of the page.

Once logged in to MySRC you will be able to view:

• Your child’s timetable, classes and teacher email addresses.
